Moving Exchange 2010 Mailboxes to New Hardware

We recently completed an Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 migration from a Dell PowerEdge 2950 to a repurposed Dell PowerEdge 860 server. After the migration was complete, we reformatted the PE 2950 and installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, then installed Exchange 2010 SP1.

When I was ready to start moving the mailboxes from the PE 860 to the PE 2950, the "New Local Move Request" option was not present in the Exchange Management Console Action Pane. After some Google searching, I found the following Exchange Management Shell command that was necessary to restore the move request option >> Get-MoveRequest | Remove-MoveRequest -Confirm:$False

Apparently, the mailboxes moved from the previous Exchange 2007 server were still in some type of move state, even though the mailbox moves were completed and Exchange 2007 uninstalled.

iTunes 3002 error

Many of you may get a 3002 timeout error when you run the iOS 5 update on your Apple devices or another time out error. Your friendly neighborhood IT department has found a way around this. Here are the steps:

Close and quit iTunes, if your iTunes is open

Navigate to the location on your computer where the iOS updates are located or have been downloaded at

Highlight that specific update for your device (It will be a file with the .ipsw file extension on it

Copy that .ipsw file to the following device location on your computer’s hard drive
a. For Windows 7 computers it will be located in:C:\Users\”YourUserName”\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\”YourAppleDevice” Software Updates
b. For MAC computers it will be located in:“Home folder”, Library, iTunes, “YourAppleDevice” Software Updates

If there is currently a .ipsw in that folder on your hard drive, remove that file and replace it with the one from the network

Once that file has copied, make sure your Apple device is connected to your computer and open iTunes back up

Give iTunes about a minute to see the new iOS file and a dialog box should come up automatically about an update

Click “Update” and follow all the prompts to update the iOS

The process will first take a backup of your current device, apply the new iOS, then restore your device from that backup it took at the start. This process will take about 10-20 minutes to complete and once it has finished it may take iTunes another minute or two to put all of your apps back on your device.

Applying the iOS 5 Update Manually

As some of you may already know, Apple has finally released its latest software iOS 5. When you decide to update to the new iOS, you will have a choice between letting iTunes do the update automatically or doing the update manually. Here are the steps to do the update manually:

Go to the following site and pick the device you want to update:

Once you have found the device save the file to your desktop or wherever you want the file to be stored at

Once the file has downloaded navigate to the location of the file and change the file extension from .zip to .ipsw and click Yes when the dialog box comes up to confirm the changes.

With your device plugged into your computer and iTunes open, click the following depending on what system your device is synced to:
a. For Windows = Hold down the “Shift” button and click the “Update” button in iTunes for your device
b. For MACs = Hold down the “Option” button and click the “Update” button in iTunes for your device

A window should open up asking you to point to where the new iOS is located at. Navigate to the folder location where you have downloaded the iOS 5 file for your device and click “Open”

Now all you have to do is follow all the prompts and wait for the update to finish. The update should take about 10-20 minutes

Unable to use Windows Updates on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 behind a WatchGuard Firewall

I recently installed Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 on an older Dell PowerEdge 2950. Dell does not make a server update and build utility for 2008 R2 on old PowerEdges. I manually initialized the RAID-5 array and booted to the 2008 install DVD. Windows found all the hardware and everything seemed to be running great until I was unable to successfully install Windows Updates with error 80072EFE. After 3 days of searching everywhere, a MS Knowledgebase article that explained the 80072EFE error as ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED.

We have two HTTP policies set in our WatchGuard XTM510 firewall. One is very restrictive and applies to most clients and devices on our network. The second policy is much less restrictive and allows more liberal access to http resources. We only use the second policy when there is an access issue for a user that we cannot resolve by adding application types of bypassed URLs to the policy.

Windows 2008 R2 SP1's Windows Update components must be more "sensitive" to the deep inspection that takes place in our first policy. Windows Updates would fail everything under policy 1, but when I added the server's host IP to policy 2, the updates ran perfectly.

MAC - Windows 7 Shared Printer

With more MACs being deployed in the Windows server environment there is one thing that every IT person, professional and amateur, will encounter and that is trying to connect a Windows 7 USB connected shared printer to a MAC computer or laptop. Before telling the user who requested the shared printer on the MAC what you really think of them, your friendly neighborhood IT department has found a solution. It involves the "LPD Print Service" on the Windows computer and the "LPD/LPR Host or Printer" section on the MAC. Make sure the printer is on and shared out then do the following steps:

1. Open the Control Panel on the Windows 7 machine
2. Select "Programs and Features" from the menu selections
3. Click "Turn Windows Features on or off"
4. Click the plus sign beside the "Print and Document Services" and make sure the "LPD Print Service" box is checked
5. Click "Ok" and/or "Apply" and close out of everything in the Windows 7 machine
6. On the MAC computer / laptop open the "Print & Fax" area via the "System Preferences" section
7. Click the "+" sign on the bottom left hand side to add the printer
8. In the window that opens up, click the "Advanced" button located near the top on the right hand side (If you do not see the "Advanced" button then right-click anyplace on the toolbar and then select "Customize Toolbar" then you can add the Advanced button it)
9. Select the "LPD/LPR Host or Printer" in the "Type" drop down field list
10. In the "URL" section, put your cursor after the "//", and type the name of the Windows 7 machine followed by the printer shared name. An example of this is in the following: Windows7ComputerName/PrinterShareName
11. Select the approate driver for the Windows printer you want to connect
12. Click "Add" and you should be good to go
13. Do a test print to bring up the box that asks for a username & password for the printer
14. Put in the username & password of the Windows 7 user in the boxes
15. Click "Ok" and the test page should print on the printer

Virtual Domain Controller Time Sync

Some I.T. departments have incorporated one or multiple virtual servers (virtual machines) on their domain for various reasons. Some use virtual servers to test out "the newest and latest software while others use virtual machines to implement more servers without having to buy more physical servers.

Whatever your case maybe, if you have one of the virtual machines as a secondary domain controller you may have experienced a time sync issue with your primary and secondary domain controllers where both domain controllers want to control the time for the whole domain. This issue can be resolved by turning off the "HyperV Time Synchronization Service" on the virtual machine that the secondary domain controller is on. Make sure you are logged in as Administrator on the virtual machine and do the following:

Right click the My Computer icon

Highlight and click Manage

On the left hand side click the plus sign beside the word Configuration to expand it

Click on Services

On the right hand side of the window scroll down till you find the HyperV Time Synchronization Service and click on it

Right click the service and choose Properties

In the new dialog box that opened up make sure you are on the General tab at the top of the box

About half way down you should see the words Startup Type and a drop down box beside it

Click the drop down box arrow and choose Disabled from the menu and hit Ok when finished, do a reboot on the virtual machine, and you should be good to go

*** Once you log in after the reboot the primary domain controller should be the only controller in charge of the time for the entire domain. To check this just execute w32tm/monitor on the command prompt. ***

Desktop shortcuts gone in Windows 7

Desktop shortcuts. In Windows XP we could have as many as we want to on our desktop and they would always be there. Naturally we thought that when Windows 7 was released it would have the same feature in it. Come to find out that most of our desktop shortcuts were disappearing from our desktop in Windows 7. This is caused by the "System Maintenance troubleshooter" that Windows 7 has. So the next time the shortcuts disappear instead of taking a Louisville Slugger to the computer to try and teach it not to erase all the shortcuts just following the simple 8 steps listed below courtesy of your friendly neighborhood IT department.

1. Click the Windows start button

2. Single click on Control Panel

3. Single click on the words System and Security

4. In the Action Center find and single click on the words Troubleshoot common computer problems

5. You should see the following window at this point

6. On the left hand side find and single click the words Change settings

7. You should now have the following window:

8. Under the System Maintenance section make sure that the circle for "Off" is filled in and click Ok

9. Exit out of everything and you should be good to go

Add a network folder to a library in Windows 7

Have you ever wanted to redirect your "My Documents" folder to a network drive location in Windows 7 but couldn't quite figure it out? Windows 7 operating system will not allow you add network drives in the library unless these drives are indexed. Most network drives cannot be indexed unless they are synchronized. This limitation will cause or may cause some headaches from the seasoned IT professional to the general user who has a home network. Instead of thinking that putting Windows XP back on the computer might be easier, your friendly neighborhood IT department has the steps for you to try using the "mklink command, almost like a "workaround". Make sure you are logged in as Administrator or as an Administrator and do the following steps:

1. Create a temporary folder on the root of your hard drive and call it anything you want. (C:\Shares)

***As an example the folder I am going to create will be called "Shares". Your folder name may be a different name.

2. Go into the "Shares" folder and create another folder called Pictures (C:\Shares\Pictures)

3. Go into the library of the computer and link the library to the Pictures folder.

4. Delete the C:\Shares\Pictures

5. Open up Command Prompt and in an elevated command prompt type in the following:
mklink /d c:\shares\pictures \\server\pictures

6. Exit out of the command prompt and you should be good to go

Windows Blue Screen Of Death - Volsnap.sys Error

The ever famous Windows blue screen of death (BSOD). At some point people from the seasoned IT professional to the end user that uses a Windows computer at their home has encountered this. There are several different error messages that are displayed when you encounter the blue screen but today your friendly neighborhood IT department would like to answer the question about the "Volsnap.sys" error.

This error is caused by a Volume Shadow Copy service that may have been corrupted or gotten unusable. The solution is simple, just replace the Volsnap.sys with the one on the install CD. Don't worry your friendly neighborhood IT department will not leave you hanging on how to do this. Here are the rundown of the steps:

1. Insert the Windows install disk into the CD drive and reboot the computer

2. Boot to the Windows Install CD if it doesn't boot to it automatically. ***The way to do this is different for each type of computer. For info on how to do this on your specific computer leave a comment on this post and your friendly neighborhood IT department will give you instructions on how to do this.***

3. Once in the install CD content menu go into the Recovery Console section

4. This should bring you to a screen where you can type in commands

5. Type in the following command: expand D:\i386\volsnap.sy- c:\windows\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys

6. You should get a message confirming everything is cool

7. Exit the install CD and reboot

8. Boot up to the hard drive and Windows should be coming up like normal with no blue screen of death

Installing Symantec on Windows 7 OS

Have you tried to push your current version of Symantec out onto a machine that is running Windows 7 operating system with no results? Does your Symantec server indicate that everything was pushed out correctly but the Windows 7 machine doesn't pop up with anything remotely indicating that Symantec is installed on it? Instead of having to reimage the machine and start everything all over again, keep reading to find out what your friendly neighborhood IT Department has found out about this.

The problem resides in XML file of the Symantec program files labeled "SyLink". This file is what links the Symantec installed on your computer to your Symantec management server. The following steps should get your Symantec back online. Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator of the computer and do the following: **If you already have Symantec installed then skip down to step number 6.

1. Navigate to the location of your Symantec setup.ext file which is generally located in the following location:
Z:\SymantecMulti-Tier 11.0 MR\Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_11.0.5_AllWin_EN_CD1
***Your drive letter may or may not be the letter Z***

2. Double click the Setup.exe file

3. The following menu should pop up

4. Click on the one that is labeled Install Symantec Endpoint Protection Client

5. Follow all the prompts to install the client Symantec and reboot after the Symantec installs

6. When Windows comes back on after the reboot, go into the Services section and stop all the Symantec Anti-Virus services

7. There are several ways to get into the services sections but one way is to right-click My Computer, click Manage and then click services

8. Single click on the drop down arrow on the words Services and Applications, and single click on the word Services

9. Scroll thought the services list, find and stop the following services: Symantec Endpoint Protection, Symantec Event Manager, Symantec Management Client, and Symantec Settings Manager

10. Once all of the above services have stopped, navigate to the following folder location: C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection

11. Copy your SyLink.xmlthis folder location and replace the SyLink.xml that is current there

12. Once the file has copied go back to the Services location to turn Symantec back on

13. Turn all the Symantec services back on that you turned off in step number 9

14. If your Symantec icon in the System Tray has a green dot on it then your Symantec is now linked up with your Symantec server and all is good

Entourage Synchronization Issues

Has your Entourage been giving you troubles with synchronization? Have you ever gotten so frustrated with your Entourage e-mail that you just wanted to see what kind of damage you can do to the computer the e-mail program is running on? Well instead of doing major damage to the computer and potentially loosing all of your e-mails, your friendly neighborhood IT Department has an answer for you. The problem most likely resides with the "Cache" of the program. All you have to do is empty the "Cache" and you should be on your way. Open Entourage and do the following:

1. Right-click on the folder that is giving you problems, highlight, and click on Folder Properties

2. A window will open up and make sure at the top the section marked General is highlighted

3. About the middle of that window look for a button labeled "Empty Cache"

4. Click that button and your all done with the steps

You may notice that everything in that folder is gone. Don't worry, the next time Entourage links up with the Exchange server all of your data in that folder will be back. MAC Keyboard Cleaning Experiment

A couple of weeks ago back your friendly neighborhood IT Department posted a couple of solutions on how to clean your MAC keyboard if it gets dirty and unresponsive. In the post it indicated that the IT department has not tried solution number 2. Your friendly neighborhood IT Department now has tired solution number 2 of those techniques. Here is the rundown of the results from that experiment:

1. Results

a. Plugged keyboard directly into the MAC tower
b. Some keys on the keyboard worked like the volume buttons, the eject button, and several others
c. When the keyboard was plugged in the icons on the desktop kept getting highlighted
d. None of the desktop icons would open up with the keyboard plugged in

2. Conclusions from IT Department

a. Solution number 2 for cleaning out the MAC keyboard does get your keyboard clean however your MAC keyboard may or may not work depending on what type of keyboard you have
b. Parts of the keyboard worked and parts of the keyboard didn't work
c. Results of your MAC keyboard test will vary

MAC Keyboard Key Problems

Is your keys on your MAC keyboard been sticking due to built up gunk over the years? Have you, a member of your family, or a guest "accidentally" spilled your drink on your keyboard? Instead of using that keyobard as a baseball bat or golf club your friendly neighborhood IT department might have a way for you to clean that gunk and drink out of your keyboard. According to Christopher Breen from Macworld.com there are two ways to clean your keyboard. Here is the rundown of those two ideas.

1. Clean keys with a can of compressed air
This method is the common method that almost all computer users know of. This method may take a few minutes to do but it gets your keyboard back in the game in no time.
2. Put the keyboard in the dishwasher
This method is not so common. If you are brave enough to try this here are the steps to take.

a. Put keyboard on top rack of area of dishwasher

b. Set dishwasher to the rinse only setting

c. Let run

d. Once dishwasher is done, remove keyboard and let drain with keys facing down

e. Let keyboard air dry (This will take about a day or two)

Internet Explorer Quiting Before Loading

Has your Internet Explorer browser ever been stopped working after running and installing Windows Updates? More specifically has your Internet Explorer browser started to open but then quickly end? Instead of finding out if your computer will survive a 10 foot drop out the window or if it will survive in a fight against your sledge hammer, your friendly neighborhood IT department has a solution for you. Chances are your Internet Explorer is not responding due to some 3rd party browser extensions that may have been downloaded when installing some programs or some 3rd party updates. This is a very easy fix. Make sure you are at the desktop and do the following:

1. Single click on "Start"

2. Highlight on the words "All Programs"

3. Highlight on the words "Accessories"

4. Highlight on the words "System Tools"

5. Highlight and single click on "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)"

6. You should see the following picture
7. In the right hand corner, near the top single click the word "Tools"

8. A drop down box should appear

9. In that drop down find the words "Internet Options"

10. Highlight and single click those words

11. Somewhere on your screen you should see the following picture

12. In the upper right corner click on the tab that says "Advanced"

13. Once in the advanced section use the vertical scroll bars to scroll down the list until you find the words "Enable third-party browser extensions*"
14. Uncheck this box and hit "Apply" and then "Ok"
15. Close out of Internet Explorer and reopen Internet Explorer and should you be good to go and on your way

Updating Java to version 6.x on the BlackBerry Professional Server

As stated in the pervious post, there are people out there who have resisted the iPhone and have decided to stick with the BlackBerry. Due to this some people using a BlackBerry may have a BlackBerry server. To those who do have a BlackBerry server and have decided to update the program "Java" on it to the latest version may have encountered a problem or a error message. The error message may have stated something like the following: The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( BMDS ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. Instead of using your BlackBerry or BlackBerry server as a projectile to take out your anger, your friendly neighborhood IT department has a solution for you. Make you are logged in as an Administrator on the BlackBerry server and do the following:

1. Navigate to the Add/Remove Programs interface the way you normally do. (For most of us this is done via the control panel)
2. From the programs listed find anything that says "Java update" and remove that update
3. Continue this process until all java updates have been removed from your computer
4. Open up the Internet browser you usually use and navigate to the following web site:
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
5. Navigate the Java web site until you have found the program "JRE1.5.0_18.exe". (If you are having trouble finding it, you can always download the latest version of Java instead)
6. Go ahead and install the Java program on your computer
7. Once the Java program/update has installed, close out of your internet browser and get back to the desktop
8. Click the "Start" button, then highlight and click "Run"
9. Type in the following: regedit and hit enter on the keyboard
10. On the left hand side, of the window that opened up, click the plus(+) sign beside the following folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
11. Next find the folder marked SYSTEM and click the plus(+) sign beside it
12. Repeat this process and navigate to the file CurrentControlSet\Services\BlackBerry MDS Connection Service ImagePath (REG_SZ)
12. Once you have found the ImagePath file, double click and open it up
13. In the value string box type in the following:
"C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\MDS\bin\bmds.exe" -s jvmpath="C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_18\bin\client\jvm.dll" -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -Xss64K -Xmx768M -Xms128M classpathdir="C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\MDS\classpath\\" wrkdir="C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\MDS\Servers\\\" webserverdir="C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\MDS\webserver\\" -rbes "_MDS-CS_1", hit "Ok" or "Enter" and you should be good to go.

Updating to BlackBerry Pro Server 4.1.4B

Yes as shocking as this may be, there are some people out there using a BlackBerry instead of an iPhone. To all of those people who have held off getting an iPhone and are using a BlackBerry you may have noticed an error when you updated your BlackBerry server to Professional Server 4.1.4B. Some of the error message you may be getting could include, but not limited to the following messages: "The description for Event ID ( 20406 ) in Source ( BlackBerry Controller ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details." Instead of trying to make your BlackBerry into a floatation device, your friendly neighborhood IT department has the solution for you. Make sure you are an administrator and logged onto the BlackBerry server and do the following:

1. Open the program "Exchange Management Shell" the way you normally do
2. Type in the following:
get-mailboxserver add-adpermission -user BESadmin -accessrights GenericRead, GenericWrite -extendedrights Send-As, Receive-As, ms-Exch-Store-Admin
3. Apply and save all changes then reboot the BlackBerry Server
4. After reboot go into the BlackBerry Manager and select your desired user
5. From the "Account" menu for that user, select "Reload User"

Delete temp files in Safari Version (3.2.3)

Some MAC users, who choose to use Safari to "surf the net", have long wondered how to delete the temporary internet files from the Safari browser and some don't really care since their MAC has been running good for many years. Deleting temp files from the browser will help ensure that your MAC keeps running good for many years and will help your MAC from slowing down while you are in cyberspace. Your friendly neighborhood IT Department has come with 5 steps that anyone can do to delete the temp files in Safari for a MAC operating system. Make sure the Safari browser is open and do the following:

1. Locate the Safari menu bar. (A picture of this menu bar is located in step 1 of the blog post below this blog post.)
2. In the Safari menu bar, single click the word "Safari"

3. Locate, highlight, and single click the words "Empty Cache..." (A picture of this is also located in between steps 3 & 4 of the blog post below this blog post.)

4. You should see the following picture:

6. You have just deleted the temporary internet files from the Safari browser.

7. You should do this about once a week depending on how much you "surf the net" to help keep your MAC running good for many more years.

Safari Version (3.2.3) Homepage

For those MAC users using Safari and would like to change their homepage to the all new Biltmore Baptist Church web site, or any other site, but don't know how to do this can now rest easy. Your friendly neighborhood BBC IT Department has found an easy way for you to do this. Make sure Safari is open and do the following:

1. Locate the Safari menu bar which should look something like the following picture.

2. Highlight and single click the word "Safari", located between the Apple symbol and the word "File".
3. Another window should open up and it should look like the following.

4. Highlight and single click the word "Preferences.." as illustrated in the picture above.

5. The next window that opens up should look like the following picture.

6. Make sure you are on the "General" tab, go to the 3rd text box down, and input the web site that you desire to be your homepage.

7. Once you have entered your favorite web site in the text box, click the little red circle located above the "General" tab and you are all set.

Internet Explorer 8 Updates/Add-On

Believe it or not but there are some old school die hard fans who still use Internet Explorer for all their browsing needs/wants. For those old school die hard fans who have updated your Internet Explorer to the latest version and get the following error box:

According to the site this is caused by an incompatibility problem between Internet Explorer 8 and any type of Roxio CD burning software. Very easy fix. Close out of all programs and do the following:

1. Open up the Internet Explorer browser the way you normally do

2. You should get a box that looks like this:

3. Check the second option the one that says "Always open Internet Explorer without this add-on."

4. Click the "Ok" button

5. Internet Explorer should open up and if it does close out of it then reopen to ensure that the issue has been fixed and you may continue on browsing the net.

6. If after you click the "Ok" button Internet Explorer doesn't open then all you have to do is open it back up and you are on your way to browsing.

Adobe Flash Player Not Installing

For those of you who have tried to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player to view pictures of other cool stuff on a Web site might have ran into a bit of a pickle. You may have gotten the message that says Adobe Flash Player has installed correctly but the pictures do not show up on the web site. Instead of taking your computer and using it for target practice your friendly neighborhood BBC IT Department has come up with a solution that will fix this issue and save your computer from the business end of a firearm.
According to the Adobe site, this issue is caused by a registry permission error on the computer Adobe Flash Player is installing. Don't worry going into the registry will not be an option, unless this solution doesn't work on your computer. Make sure you are the local administrator of the computer and get on the desktop with no other programs running and do the following:

Double click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop or click "Start", highlight and click on "My Computer"

Navigate to the following folder: C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\

Find the file with the extension .ocx and look at memorize the name of the file. If there are two files with .ocx at the end just memorize the one that says the word "Flash" followed by a number.

Once you have the file name memorized, or written down, close out of that folder and click "Start" on the desktop

Highlight and click on "Run"

Type "cmd" in the box (without the quotation marks) and hit OK

Once the command line screen comes up type the following without the quotation marks: "regsvr32 Flash____.ocx" = The underline part is that number of that file name you memorized in Step 3.

Once you have entered that hit "Enter"

A message should pop up saying the following: "DllRegisterServer in Flash____.ocx succeeded"

Flash Player is installed so you close out of that command line box and enjoy the pictures on web sites.
